Before you leave Australia, plan how you will pay overseas, check the total cost, organise bills at home and make sure you can still access your accounts. Then write down what you will do if your first payment option or phone stops working. A useful plan should be easy to follow when you are tired, offline or dealing with a change of plans.

Your travel money plan at a glance

Separate trip spending, bills at home and a contingency amount in your budget.
Compare exchange rates and fees, and prepare an alternative payment method.
Check overseas banking access, security codes and payments due while you are away.
Read your insurance terms and verify unfamiliar bookings before paying.

1. Give every part of the trip a place in your budget

Start with a blank page before comparing cards. Divide your money plan into three parts:

Part	What to record
Spending abroad	Accommodation still to pay, transport, meals, activities and other planned purchases
Commitments at home	Rent or mortgage payments, utilities, subscriptions and other costs falling due while you are away
Contingencies	An amount you choose to keep available for changes and unexpected expenses

Mark each item as already paid, due before departure or due during the trip. That stops a flight you have already bought from being counted again as money you still need to set aside.

Keep the working total in Australian dollars, with a separate column for expenses quoted in another currency. Record the date of each conversion estimate so you can revisit it. Treat the estimate as a planning assumption, rather than a prediction of where exchange rates will move.

2. Compare the cost of how you will actually pay

A fee-free label does not establish the lowest total cost. The ACCC recommends considering both the exchange rate and fees, with quotes checked at the same time on the same day. Its guidance identifies possible travel-card charges for ATM use, inactivity, closure and spending in a currency not loaded on the card. ACCC foreign currency guidance.

Make your comparison specific to the trip:

What would an ordinary purchase cost?
What would a cash withdrawal cost, including any separate ATM charge?
Are there ongoing charges or conditions?
Is the payment method accepted where you plan to use it?
How would you replace or block it if it went missing?

Check the provider’s current terms for anything unclear. A lower headline fee is only one part of that comparison.

myGov recommends considering more than one payment option in case something goes wrong. myGov travel finances. Decide which option you expect to use first, then describe how you would access the alternative. A backup plan is more useful when you know how it works before departure.

3. Pause when a terminal offers Australian dollars

An overseas terminal or ATM may offer to convert the transaction into your home currency. This is dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. Visa says its merchants and ATMs should show both currency amounts, the exchange rate and additional charges, and give you a choice to accept or decline the conversion. Visa’s DCC explanation.

Choosing local currency declines that conversion offer; your card’s conversion arrangements and fees still matter. The ACCC cautions that paying in Australian dollars may cost more and can still attract an international transaction fee. ACCC foreign currency guidance.

Check the disclosed conversion offer against your card’s terms. An Australian-dollar display does not, by itself, establish a cheaper transaction. If the choice is unclear, ask before approving it.

4. Check account access and bills before you leave

myGov recommends telling your bank about your travel and arranging for bills and other payments to be handled while you are away. myGov travel finances. Follow your own bank’s current travel-notification and overseas-access instructions.

For each bill due during the trip, record its date, amount if known and payment method. Check that any scheduled payment is set up as intended and that you have allowed for it in the account balance. If someone is helping, agree on the task explicitly. Keep one list you can check while away.

Check security codes before changing your SIM

Internet access and bank authorisation are separate checks. For example, NAB says receiving its SMS security messages overseas depends on roaming-capable equipment and a compatible network. It may send certain codes by enabled push notification instead, depending on its security assessment. NAB SMS Security. That is one bank’s guidance, not a promise about every bank or transaction.

Before switching to a travel SIM or eSIM, ask your bank which authorisations you may need and how to recover access if your phone is lost or replaced. Ask your telco whether your registered number can receive messages at the destination and what the plan charges. ACMA recommends checking destination coverage and charges for calls, texts and data. ACMA overseas mobile guidance. A working data connection alone does not establish that a code sent to your Australian number will arrive.

5. Put insurance details alongside the money plan

Smartraveller advises reading the Product Disclosure Statement and choosing cover that fits your destinations, trip length and planned activities. If you intend to rely on credit-card travel insurance, confirm what you must do to activate it. Smartraveller travel insurance.

Record the policy reference, emergency contact and where you have saved the documents. Ask the insurer about unresolved questions before relying on an answer. Include the premium in your planning and check any excess you may need to pay. Your insurance documents and travel budget serve different purposes; keep both available.

6. Check a booking before sending money

Scamwatch warns that criminals impersonate businesses and advertise holiday properties they do not own. It recommends checking the genuine organisation and who you are paying. Scamwatch buying and selling scams.

Before paying an unfamiliar provider, check the business, booking details and proposed payment destination. If a message changes the payment instructions, pause and verify the request using contact details you independently trust. A deadline is a reason to check carefully.

If you suspect a scam, contact your bank or card provider immediately. Scamwatch guidance.

A simple example: work out what is available to spend

Suppose a traveller has $3,600 available after paying for flights. They list $500 of bills falling due at home and choose to keep $400 for contingencies. Their working budget becomes:

One balance. Three jobs.

A fictional $3,600 starting balance.

Bills at home $500
Contingencies $400
Trip costs $2,700

Budget item	Amount in AUD
Available after flights	$3,600
Set aside for bills at home	-$500
Keep for contingencies	-$400
Available for remaining trip costs	$2,700

Across fourteen days, $2,700 works out to about $193 a day. Any accommodation, transport or other trip costs still unpaid must come from that same $2,700. It is not all available for meals and activities.

These figures are fictional planning amounts, not a suggested budget or exchange-rate estimate. The useful step is the subtraction: the account balance may also need to cover commitments at home. If planned costs do not fit, revise the plan before spending the contingency amount twice.

Your final departure check

Check	What you should be able to explain
Budget	Which costs are paid, still due or reserved for changes
Payment costs	The relevant fees, currency conversion arrangements and any ATM charges
Alternative payment	How you would pay if your first option stopped working
Bank access	How you will receive authorisations and contact your bank if access fails
Home bills	What is due, how it will be paid and who is responsible
Insurance and bookings	Where documents are saved and which payment details you have verified

Could you follow this plan without rebuilding it from memory? If the answer is no, simplify your notes before adding anything else.
